Which lotus to order: Coreless (drilled) for the cleanest, sweetest, most calming bowl.

In Chinese food culture, certain foods are eaten less for nutrition and more for how they make you feel. Lotus and lily are the classic 'calming' pair — lotus traditionally linked to a settled mind, lily to easing the nerves. A warm bowl at night is a small ritual of winding down.

That calming character is why lotus and lily appear in so many wellness products today — from evening dessert kits to caffeine-free bottled drinks — a wholesome image rooted in tradition rather than additives.

Ingredients

  • Coreless (drilled) lotus seeds
    80 g
  • Dried lily bulb
    15 g
  • Longan (dragon eye) dried
    20 g
  • Water
    ~1.2 L
  • Rock sugar
    ~70 g, to taste

Method

  1. 1

Rinse 80 g coreless lotus; soak 20 min. Rinse the lily and longan.

  2. 2

Simmer the lotus in ~1.2 L water 25–30 min until almost tender.

  3. 3

Add the lily and longan; simmer 15 min more until everything is soft and sweetly aromatic.

  4. 4

Sweeten with rock sugar to taste; serve warm as a gentle nightcap dessert.

Tips

  • Tip 1:Coreless keeps the broth clean and sweet — any bitter note would spoil this gentle, calming dessert.
  • Tip 2:Dried longan adds natural sweetness, letting you cut back on added sugar for a lighter, cleaner recipe.
  • Tip 3:Serve warm about an hour before bed — this dessert is naturally caffeine-free.
